  • Solid operational performance that delivered sound economic benefits
  • Significant investment in capital development with good progress achieved toward growth goals
  • Extensive job creation, directly and indirectly
  • Further improvement in safety performance statistics
  • Record number of employees on ART
  • Mineral rights conversions for Marula, Leeuwkop and Impala (post year-end) achieved, signifying acceptance by the DME of the company’s Social and Labour Plans and Environmental Management Plans for these operations
  • Good progress on transformation – HDSA and women in mining statistics improved
  • Appointment of a group safety, health and environmental executive, a position created for the first time
  • Admission again into the JSE SRI index and submission of the group’s response to the Carbon Disclosure Project
  • Establishment of the Impala Bafokeng Trust (IBT), with the first joint projects having been funded during the year
  • Regrettably 12 employees lost their lives
  • Worsening socio-political situation in Zimbabwe, delaying further investment and expansion, hampering operational performance and causing hardship for employees
  • Significant power shortages which resulted, in the short term, in lost production and will, in the longer term, delay expansions
  • Delays in environmental permitting owing to the lack of capacity in regulatory structures
  • High levels of turnover, exacerbated by artisanal skills shortages
  • Eliminating accidents at work and progressing towards our goal of zero harm
  • Ongoing implementation of appropriate measures to prevent NIHL and TB
  • Continued proactive management of HIV and AIDS, and the continued roll-out of ART, to minimise the impact on individuals, the company and the community as a whole
  • Managing costs in a high inflationary environment
  • Attainment of all necessary environmental permits
