Luka multi-purpose sports facility

The long awaited Luka Multi Purpose Sports Facility was recently completed at a cost of R328 000. It is situated at the Luka Primary School grounds.

A brainchild of the Impala Sports and Training Academy, the facility will cater to the Luka Township community. On completion it was handed to the Rustenburg Municipality who will manage and keep the facility in working condition. The community will benefit in that there were no sports facilities in the area. This is the first of its kind.

Willie Esterhuizen, Sports Manager at Implats said: “There are a lot of youngsters who are talented in sports but have no place to play. The Multi Purpose Facility is ideal in that it will cater for different kinds of sports.” The facility boasts a normal size soccer field, completely grassed and fenced, which can be used for school tournaments.

Impala Sport and Training Academy which is situated at Shaft 6 will benefit from the facility as it will get more youngsters interested in sports. The academy currently has a cricket club, a Netball Club, Rugby Club and a soccer club as supported sporting codes.

The appointment of various coaches has made a big impact on the different sporting codes. “We have appointed Chris Buitendag who is a former provincial coach and the winner of the Currie Cup 1999 and 2000 as Director of rugby coaching. We have also acquired Brendan Silent who played for Orlando Pirates, a top PSL team to conduct soccer coaching clinics. Brendan also played for Bafana Bafana,” said Willie.

Permission has been granted to the Impala Sport Academy by the local government and the Department of Education to assist the communities and schools in various sporting codes.

Lefaragatlhe Multi Purpose Centre is in progress and will be the second in the planned 29 villages around Rustenburg, where Implats operates.
