Mafaseng is a close corporation formed in 2007 after Implats decided to outsource the Construction and Maintenance section of the Utilities & Technical Services department. This section was responsible for carpentry, painting, plumbing and glazing services.
This empowerment initiative is headed by Mike Dire who was an artisan at UTS. He was elected by his colleagues to manage the operation.
Mafaseng consists of 19 employees from Luka, Phokeng, Kanana and Freedom Park. Peter Raseleka, the department’s Services Engineer, was instrumental in setting up Mafaseng. He still oversees the business, continuously, guiding it towards growth.
“We would like to see Mafaseng develop, ultimately offering its services outside Impala. The guys have a lot of experience since they have done this over a number of years,” says Raseleka. Services are currently rendered at Mineral Processes and Services Departments with the idea of moving to the shafts.
The primary challenge faced by the company is replenishing the skills necessary to sustain the business. “If we had a pool where we could draw from and acquire more skills then we would be able to grow quicker,” Dire adds.
Implats is committed to exploring all opportunities in beneficiation with a view to pursuing those that make commercial sense.
