Engaging with stakeholders

Implats engages extensively with its stakeholders on a regular and ongoing basis depending on the relationship and the matters on hand. Initial steps have been taken to develop a formal stakeholder engagement programme and to ensure that a more formal and rigorous process of stakeholder identification and engagement is developed. A stakeholder engagement specialist was appointed during the year. The table below illustrates some of the company’s engagements with key stakeholder groups during the year under review.

While the relationship recognises that each has its own agenda, there is a clear recognition of common goals and interdependence.
CustomersImplats has a representative office in Tokyo. Relationships are maintained with key long-term customers through personal visits, quality control, and regular meetings.Stable long term relationships have been built up over a period of time for the development and maintenance of long term contracts.
SuppliersSuppliers’ forums, equipment forums, presentations and workshops; and mentorship and business training for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and co-operatives.Implats is fully committed to the transformation of its supplier base and in the development of local (especially broad-based black economic empowerment) SMMEs and co-operatives.
ProducersSteelpoort Valley Producers’ Forum, Rustenburg Producers’ Forum; Chambers of Mines in South Africa and Zimbabwe, responses to national issues relating to legislative and policy interactions. South African Mining Development Agency (SAMDA)Implats co-operates with other producers in developing strategies in respect of common issues.
BEE partnersBoard meetings, Community Trusts, Transformation Committee: Group local and steering committees. Partners are RBN, Tubatse, Bakwena Ba Mogopa and Mmakau.Implats engages actively with its BEE partners to ensure their active involvement in the company and in the transformation process.
